HS
The
Panthers finished fourth. Ten wrestlers placed at the
meet and eight qualified for the District Meet this
coming Saturday. Nick Mernedakis was sectional champion
at 215. Karstan Gerenscer at 145 and Ryan Melin at 152
finished 2nd. Third place finishers were Ross Hartley
at 103, Tone Biggs at 125, Evan Williams at 160, and
Clay Brown at 171. Josh Crowe finished fourth at 140
to round out the qualifiers for districts. Tyler Bahas
finished 5th at 119 and Nick Beougher was sixth at 130

The
old phrase "right place at the right time"
can best describe the Panthers game last night. In a
match dominated by the defenses, Westerville South took
advantage of their breaks and eliminated the Panthers
from the tournament 2-0 in a District semi-final match
at Panther Stadium. Neither side was able to muster
a consistent offensive thrust through most of the first
half. Drue Herbert's snap shot from 20 yards forced
a sprawling save, on the first Panther shot, in the
23rd minute. Five minutes later Tommy Frost took a pass
and shot from 10 yards out. His shot was deflected by
a defender, and forced a diving save to keep the match
scoreless. Exactly nine minutes from the half, a South
free kick was deflected in the box and caromed into
the back left corner of the net for the first goal of
the match. Greg Lewis made a sliding stop and scrambled
to make a diving save one minute from the half to keep
South from growing their lead. Seventeen minutes into
the second stanza, a Panther shot was deflected in the
box toward the goal, but was cleared off the line by
the South defense. Three minutes later Greg Lewis came
out strong for a stop and got enough of the ball to
slow it, before Tony Damceski hustled back to clear
the ball off the line. The Panthers' best chance of
the night occurred in the 69th minute as South was called
for a handball in the box. Drue Herbert put his PK low
and left, but the South keeper was able to make the
stop. Three minutes later Brendan Ross' header from
a corner slid just wide of the left post as the Panthers
pressed on offense. Five minutes from time the visitors
struck for their second goal, and the North Boys could
not crack the goal line. The Panthers end a tremendous
season at 15-1-2. SAVES: Greg Lewis 5.

OT. A
classic battle took place Thursday night in Panther
Stadium as the second-seeded North Boys ousted the defending
District champions 2-1 in double overtime. In a match
frought with tension and nervous energy, the cat-and-mouse
game went back and forth at a rapid pace throughout,
and was tightly played by both squads. The Panthers
struck first as Tom Ryan crossed from the left side
to Tommy Frost, whose header from 10 yards out was well-placed
for the goal, in the 5th minute. Both sides played pressure
defense. The Panthers tried to neutralize the forward
speed of Scioto and counter it with a switching man
defense at the back. Scioto was able to level the match
in the 18th minute, and the teams went to the break
tied at 1. Keeper Greg Lewis made several nice first
half stops, including a leaping one-hander off a Scioto
header in the 32nd minute. In the second half, the defenses
continued to dominate. Both Danny Gjorevski and Danny
Thorla had good chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation,
but the first was stopped on a low save, and Thorla's
chested effort went just wide of the left post about
3 minutes from time. Neither side had a strong shot
in the first OT, and the Panthers came out very aggressive
in the second OT, putting the Irish back on their heels,
forcing them to defend more in their back third. North
had two quality chances five minutes in, before Brendan
Ross headed in Drue Herbert's corner kick halfway through
the period to give the home side a dramatic victory.
North advances to the District semi-finals on Tuesday
Oct. 26 at home at 7:00. Their record grows to 15-0-2.

The
Lady Panthers' outstanding season ended last night in
the Regional Semi-Finals as defending state champion
Dublin Coffman defeated Pickerington North 4-1 in a
game played on the artificial turf at Upper Arlington.
The game was the first on turf for North, whereas Coffman
was playing their ninth game of the year on an artificial
surface. Nerves played a part as the Lady Panthers could
not settle into a rhythm. The lone highlight came in
the second half as Molly Cornwell delivered a corner
kick to the goalbox, where it was headed home by Mara
Hughes. North ends their season at 19-2, and has a great
nucleus returning for next season. Congratulations to
Coach Campbell and his staff, and the fantastic Lady
Panthers on a wonderful season! -

A strong blustery wind played a major part in the run
of play during Saturday's District Championship match
as the Lady Panthers hosted Worthington Kilbourne. The
Wolves had the wind at their backs in the first half,
and were able to maintain offensive control in the Lady
Panther defensive half for a considerable portion of
the opening period, but the stout North defense refused
to buckle, holding the visitors without a goal to go
to halftime tied at zero. Katy Rittberger made two fine
stops in the period to keep Kilbourne off the board.
North took immediate advantage of the wind in the second
half, getting the ball in the Wolves defensive area.
From a free kick on the right side, Molly Cornwell touched
a short pass to Stephanie Brindle, who raced along the
end line and from a tough angle send a ball across the
goalmouth. The strong wind helped bend the ball just
enough to catch the far post and settle into the back
of the net, just ninety seconds into the half. The goal
was the first shot of the match for North. Shortly after
the goal, the strength of the wind began to drop, and
Kilbourne was able to move the ball into the North half
of the field more regularly. The Lady Panthers' second
shot on the night did not occur until the 58th minute,
when Molly Cornwell sent a left side corner kick into
the box, bending it away from the keeper. Stopper Mara
Hughes charged through the scrum of players and chested
the ball into the goal from 5 yards out to double the
advantage for the home side. Katy Rittberger made several
quality saves in the second half to help stymie the
Wolves attack. Ally Kreim was relentless on defense,
stifling a number of Kilbourne attacks as the defense
worked furiously to protect their lead. In the end,
the Lady Panthers were able to claim their first District
Championship, following up on their first OCC title,
achieved two weeks ago. North is 19-1. GOALS: Stephanie

The
British have a wonderful phrase to describe what happens
when a team does virtually everything right during stretches
of a game. That phrase is "on song", and indeed
the Lady Panthers were "on song" in the first
half of the District semi-final vs DeSales last night
at Panther Stadium. Ali Leak's hat trick propelled North
into Saturday's District final at Panther Stadium. Eight
minutes in Renee McCulley sent a pass from near midfield
through the center for Ali Leak who split the defense
and shot hard from 12 yards. The ball bounced off the
keeper and into the goal for a 1-0 North lead. One minute
later Molly Cornwell's 30-yard free kick went just over
the bar. Stephanie Brindle's diagonal run onto a Lauren
Prestifilippo pass in the 15th minute put the Lady Panthers
up by two as she sent her shot into the left corner
of the Stallion net. One minute later Brittney Bickham
crossed for Cornwell in the box, but her header glanced
off the crossbar. In the 18th minute Bickham sent a
hard cross goalward, forcing the DeSales keeper to jump,
arms outstretched, but she deflected the shot into the
net as the Panthers lead by three. DeSales' first shot
wasn't taken until the 37th minute, and was nicely saved
by Katy Rittberger. Seconds later Amanda Olszewski whistled
a 20-yard rebound into the Stallion net to put the home
side up 4-0. A DeSales goal in the 38th minute was offset
by Ali Leak's 39th minute goal on a breakaway as the
Lady Panthers went to the break up 5-1. It was the Lady
Panthers' best half of the season. Fifteen minutes into
the second half Jordan Seibert crossed to Leak in the
box for a shot from seven yards, and the Lady Panthers
were up 6-1. A Stallion PK and free kick goal around
the 70-minute mark narrowed the margin to 6-3, but the
home side was able to squash any further attack, and

Pickerington
North 2 Westerville South 0. The
Lady Panthers made a two goal halftime advantage stand
up, and advanced to the District Semi-Finals with a
2-0 win over the Wildcats on a soggy Panther Stadium
pitch Saturday night. Molly Cornwell hit Ali Leak with
a cross in the box in the 5th minute, but her effort
was stopped on a diving save. About 90 seconds later
Raina Barnett spotted Leak in the box from the right
side, and Leak's turn-and-shoot move from 8 yards produced
the first Panther goal. Six minutes further on, Katie
Beth Glenn cleared a South shot off the goal line to
keep North in the lead. The Lady Panthers kept possession
more than the visitors in the first half, but could
not take advantage until Molly Cornwell's 30-yard free
kick slammed into the back left corner of the net to
put the home side up 2-0. Thirty seconds into the second
half, Brittney Bickham had a shot from 10 yards drift
just wide of the left post. Eight minutes later Molly
Cornwell's tap from 3 yards away managed to squirt across
the face of the goal. The strongest threat of the second
half for South occurred in the 74th minute as a corner
kick was cleared off the line by the defense. The Lady
Panthers are now 17-1 on the year, and play at home
on Wednesday October 27 in the District Semi-Finals.

The
Lady Panthers advanced to the Central District quarter-final
round with a 7-0 win over visiting Grove City. Defense
was the name of the game for North as they stifled the
'Hound attack, limiting Grove City to 2 shots on the
night. The Panthers had several early close range attempts,
but were unable to connect in the first few minutes.
Molly Cornwell got the home side on the board in the
15th minute, making a mazy run through the GC defense
and slotting home a shot from 5 yards. Three minutes
further on Cornwell was tripped in the box and converted
the resulting PK for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers took a
3-0 lead into the half when Raina Barnett smacked a
left-footed shot into the back left corner of the net
from 30 yards out just over 90 seconds from the whistle.
She nearly scored again from long range seconds later
as her lofted 25-yarder bounced over the keeper, but
went just wide. Two-and-a-half minutes into the second
half the lead grew again as Stephanie Brindle crossed
from the right corner into the box where Ali Leak headed
the ball home from 10 yards out. Four minutes later
Leak crossed for Jordan Seibert who knocked in her shot
from 7 yards to put North up 5-0. In the 49th minute
Renee McCulley took a long run down the left side and
crossed into the box for Seibert, who passed off to
Brindle for a stick-in from short range to make it 6-0.
The final tally on the night was another long range
blast from Raina Barnett. She collected a Grove City
clearance and rippled the back of the net from 30 yards
out. The Lady Panthers are 16-1 on the year. GOALS:
