+ Student Athletes
Opening Remarks – Meeting was called to order by President Scott Glackin. The new Head Football Coach will be introduced toward the end of the meeting.
Coach’s Report – New Head Coach, Tom Phillips was introduced by Mark Aprile toward the end of the meeting. Coach Phillips believes his position as the new head coach is a great opportunity. He said he looked at Pickerington as a community with the potential for growth and progression and the talent that is definitely at the school. He is originally from Youngstown, Ohio; graduated from University of Akron; earned Masters Degree in Sports Science and wrote thesis on Strength & Conditioning at Ashland University; started coaching at Borman HS and currently coaching at Bexley HS.
Coach Phillips talked more about his beliefs and theories which is in the Panther
Football “The Program” that includes detailed information regarding his theories, objectives, expectations of the Panther Football Players and Parents. “The Program” was available for parents at the meeting and will soon be on the Panther website.
Mike Knapp is his Strength & Conditioning Coach and has an outstanding program.
Coach Phillips would like to meet parents and encouraged them to stop by during the Saturday practices.
Vice President’s Report – Alicia Reed not present.
Secretary’s Report – Cheryl Effinger – Minutes from November 06 and December 06 available to members at this meeting. Meeting Sign In Sheet passed around to be signed and updated with email new/different email addresses than on file or those members not currently receiving QBC emails.
Treasurer’s Report – Dave Lawler – Two financial reports passed around to members – one being the QBC account and the other being the BINGO account. Dave gave monetary details of both accounts. The history from Week 1 to Week 75 is on front page of the Bingo report and Dave explained the fluctuation of the Bingo account due to slight drop in attendance at Bingo due to non-smoking law – some players went to Buckeye Lake Bingo which recently enforced non-some and hopefully QBC Bingo attendance will pick up soon. Our Bingo player attendance averages about 61 players/week; $533 profit/week; a little over $2000 profit/month. Dave mentioned that QBC Valentine’s Dance is coming up which should produce about $1000-$2000.
Old/Current Business
January Meeting – Scott reminded members that there was no meeting in January due to the second Monday of the month being the same day as the Ohio State National Championship Game.
Girls Kroger Classic – Scott said that the QBC fulfilled all of our commitments there. The QBC ran the Concession Stand from the opening to closing days of the Kroger Classic. He thanked all who volunteered during that time.
Holiday Party – The party was held in December at Bill & Lisa Stevens’ house as a thank-you to Bingo Volunteers. Scott commented on how well everything went and the party may be something we consider again in the future if Bingo continues (as a fundraiser it needs to make more profit) A member asked the question if the other side of The Legion was non-smoking because a few of the Bingo players had commented that it was the principal of one side being smoking vs the other side being non-smoking and that was their reason for not attending QBC Bingo. Scott again mentioned the Buckeye Lake situation and other Bingo halls being non-smoking and the players were not going to have any other options. Dave stated the other reason QBC Bingo went to non-smoking is that it the principal of being a state law and whether others enforce it or not is none of our concern. The QBC runs a Bingo operation that represents our school and it and its members need to be a law-abiding and positive example. Scott mentioned that a vote was taken by members at the December QBC meeting to go to non-smoking. He stated that representing the school that is hard to be blatantly breaking the law whether it is being enforced or not – we need to be upstanding citizens and follow the rules. Even though Bingo non-smoking has been down attendance/profit-wise but should rebound and if not maybe Bingo is a fundraiser QBC should reconsider.
Valentine Dance – Scott asked Jan Shore, Valentine Dance Chairwoman to give information on upcoming dance. Jan reminded that the dance was the next Saturday, February 17 – those wanting to attend should get their reservations in and could do that there at the meeting. Jan gave members the exact details of dance. Jan also gave details for volunteers for set-up, etc. Scott added that all student athletes in attendance could be available for volunteer set-up and to sign up with Jan. Scott and Jan encouraged members to invite family and friends as it is not just a QBC event.
Weight Lifting – Scott asked Erin Glackin to speak as she has been to the weight-lifting room to take pictures. Erin gave Mary Beth Johann credit for the idea of taking pictures from the start of the season until the end for material for the Football Highlight Video shown and the Football Banquet. Erin will be taking pictures otherwise and invited other parents to do the same. She said for what she knows of weight lifting, the players are working hard and the weight room training is very organized.
OSU Spring Game Trip – An idea that Scott came up with and thought would be a nice team bonding for the players – it is close, inexpensive and players could build camaraderie. The idea is in the beginning thought/planning stages. Scott asked that if anyone had any connections to OSU to please let him know, as we may be able to get donations, etc.
Golf Outing – Scott stated that we weren’t very far in planning this fund-raising event.
Scott mentioned that Wayne Campbell has always helped in the past and asked Wayne if he would be willing to help this year. A member asked a question about a date and getting golf reservations at a club. A discussion took place about dates interfering with other sports and community events. Scott responded that we would be taking care of the details soon
Game Films –A question was asked by a member regarding the previous year football game films. A discussion took place as to the location of the game films. There are two sets of game films – Mark Aprile has one set and Don Gordon has loaned out other films and the QBC is in the process of getting those back. Dave Lawler mentioned that the QBC is looking into business place that will store our films and will make copies of them for those who want to purchase them. Scott assumes that the new Coach will want a copy of the films.
Sports Equipment – A question was asked by a member regarding talking with Don Gordon in the past about knee braces, etc. like Thomas-Worthington HS has for their football players and if the new coach might be interested in the program. The member explained that Don Joy Company stocks preventive injury equipment for the players and some costs of the equipment were talked about, including non-profit and corporate sponsors. Scott said he wasn’t sure what plans the new coach had but it would be something that could be looked into. He also suggested that a representative from Don Joy or similar company sell the coach on the idea and the QBC could possibly help purchase the equipment.
Suggestions – Scott asked if there was anything that the QBC could be doing better. A member stated that as a Freshman parent that it is very important to get the Junior High involved and in doing so could get the parents to be more involved in volunteering etc.
Scott agreed saying that the QBC needs to do a better job in getting the word out as we have not but need to see more participation from the lower classes. Jan stated that the under-classmen and parents have felt excluded in the past from all areas and that football comes together as a team not just as a grade. Cheryl stated that it is sometimes not easy to communicate as information changes and that the QBC has talked about sending out a periodical newsletter to better communicate, especially with parents who have no email address. A member suggested that a representative be at the Mandatory Football Parent Meeting for the lower classes – Scott said that would happen. More discussion was held regarding other ideas that would be helpful in getting more parents involved including mandatory volunteer assignments, an incentive program, a monetary reward, etc.
Reminders – Scott reminded members that each class Bingo Volunteer month is listed on the meeting agenda. Also the offices telephone numbers and email addresses are listed on the meeting agenda and members are welcome to call/email with suggestions or ideas.
Adjournment – The meeting was adjourned by Scott Glackin.
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl Effinger, Secretary
